Cold-formed steel sections, also known as cold-formed steel profiles or cold-formed sections, refer to steel sections of various cross-sectional shapes and dimensions produced by bending hot-rolled or cold-rolled steel strips.

Compared to hot-rolled structural steel, for the same cross-sectional area, the radius of gyration can be increased by 50% to 60%, and the section modulus can be increased by 1.5 to 3.0 times, thereby allowing for a more efficient utilization of material strength. Compared to conventional steel structures (i.e., those made from traditional I-beams, channel sections, angle sections, and steel plates), cold-formed steel can save approximately 30% to 50% in steel consumption. In certain cases, the steel consumption of cold-formed steel structures is comparable to that of reinforced concrete structures under the same conditions, making it an economical cross-sectional steel material. Cold-formed steel has a wide range of applications and is generally used in the construction, railway rolling stock, automotive, and shipbuilding industries to manufacture structural and auxiliary components.

Cold-formed steel sections have the following characteristics:

(1) Economical and rational cross-sections that save material. The cross-sectional shape of cold-formed steel sections can be designed as needed, featuring a rational structure and a higher section modulus per unit weight than hot-rolled steel sections. Under the same load, this allows for reduced component weight and material savings. When used in building structures, cold-formed steel can save 38% to 50% more metal than hot-rolled steel; when used in agricultural machinery and vehicles, it can save 15% to 60% more metal. It facilitates construction and reduces overall costs.

(2) Wide variety of products. It is possible to produce various profiles with uniform wall thickness and complex cross-sectional shapes—as well as cold-formed steel sections made from different materials—that are difficult to manufacture using conventional hot-rolling methods.

(3) The product surface is smooth, with an attractive appearance and precise dimensions. Furthermore, lengths can be flexibly adjusted as needed, with all products supplied in fixed or multiple lengths, thereby improving material utilization.

(4) During production, processes such as punching can be integrated to meet diverse requirements.

冷弯型钢具有以下特点：
(1)截面经济合理，节省材料。冷弯型钢的截面形状可以根据需要设计，结构合理，单位重量的截面系数高于热轧型钢。在同样负荷下，可减轻构件重量，节约材料。冷弯型钢用于建筑结构可比热轧型钢节约金属38%～50%，用于农业机械和车辆可节约金属15%～60%。方便施工，降低综合费用。
(2)品种繁多。可以生产用一般热轧方法难以生产的壁厚均匀、截面形状复杂的各种型材和各种不同材质的冷弯型钢。
(3)产品表面光洁，外观好，尺寸精确，而且长度也可以根据需要灵活调整，全部按定尺或倍尺供应，提高材料的利用率。
(4)生产中还可与冲孔等工序相配合，以满足不同的需要。
